18 Reasons to Hate Peyton

While I suspect the Colts will win the Super Bowl, much to my chagrin.

Here are 18 reasons to hate Peyton:
1. His dad was an NFL QB. (Which means he had at least an above-average lifestyle growing up.)
2. He was completely sheltered as a kid.
3. He was (and perhaps still is) completely helpless with menial tasks, even after he finished college. For example, he needed pictures to tell him which shirts went with which pants, etc.
4. He is a goody-two-shoes, teacher's pet, kind of person.
5. He married a girl who graduated from UVA (and to make it even worse, she was from out-of-state).
6. He's already made over $100 million in his career (just from football), and he is probably going to be the first player with a $20 million dollar per year contract.
7. He does too many commercials (especially in East Tennessee).
8. He has only had two losing seasons (1998 - rookie year, 2001 - 4th year)
9. He gets away with a lot of funny business at the line of scrimmage before the snap.
10. He has never been seriously injured - has he ever had to play through pain?
11. He was too good to play for Ole Miss (where his father and two brothers attended and played; and where his mother attended and consequently met his father)
12. He beat Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl his Freshman year at Tennessee
13. The Jamie Ann Naughright incident [buttgate]
14. He will break almost all meaningful QB records in the NFL
15. He is the only TN player to have his number retired (for good).
16. He has a Super Bowl win and Super Bowl MVP (although he didn't deserve it over Rhodes)
17. He never beat Florida
18. The NY Jets could have had Manning in 1997, but he decided to stay at Tennessee for a senior season (after already graduating), and then the Jets traded away the #1 pick (St. Louis took Orlando Pace). The NY Jets have not had a QB since. Just think, NY Jets with Peyton and NY Giants with Eli. But Peyton screwed it up.

Who would you do? Most memorable sporting event.

CM asked:
What is the most memorable sporting event you have been to? And why was it special?

I grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere Virginia. I didn't really have family members who were sports fanatics (at least fanatic enough to drive me 4-5 hours one-way anywhere; let alone to a professional game). Thus, most of my professional (or major college) game experience has been since I was 16.

Let's see, I've attended a few MLB games:
1. Orioles game during Ripken's streak (before he broke it). I'm not sure exactly what game/year, I'm going to guess 1994 or 1995.
2. Sammy Sosa 3-roidrun day. (Only visit to Wrigley - slept at a rest stop in Indiana.)
3. A couple of other O's games; including a 1-0 game.
4. A 1-0 game at Fenway.
I guess the two 1-0 games makeup for the Sosa 3 homerun game?

I've never attended a professional football or basketball game (although I was across the street from the Wizards complex the night Jordan scored 50 for them). I've attended college football games in a variety of places cheering on my two schools Virginia Tech (and more recently Penn State). I've also attended a game at Neyland (UTK).

CM and others have covered the Virginia Tech vs. Miami, 2003 game, the tropical storm game (
2003 VT-Texas A&M), and the (would have been) lightening game (2000 GT @ VT). The UVA game (2004) and Duke game (2008) are memorable for family reasons. I also proposed (to my wife) before the 2005 UNC game on the VT campus.

So without repeating the VT - Miami 2003 game, and without getting too personal. I am going to discuss the October 8, 2005 ESPN Gameday Matchup; undefeated Ohio State visiting undefeated Penn State (Scroll to 5:19-5:20 to see my sign).

Anyways, this game taught me one very important lesson. I am only a fan of one college team ... and that is the Virginia Tech Hokies. I wore VT gear to the game, took shit from both Ohio State and Penn State fans, and I didn't care. I held up my VT sign during Gameday and heard people talk smack and then 5 minutes later hear them on their cellphones saying "I'm next to the VT guy!" "Yes, you can see me, all right!". I sat in the stands and had fun, but still donned the VT gear. In fact, I always had on VT gear (hat, shirt, jacket) when attending a Penn State sporting event, even when they played Notre Dame.

So let this be a lesson to all of us ... you can only be a true fan of one team in my opinion. [And no, I didn't miss the VT game on Oct. 8, 2005, they played Marshall during the day, I saw it on cable, and then went to the OSU-PSU game in the evening.]

Lane Kiffin

Ok, my take on Lane Kiffin.

First, Mike Hamilton (AD) is an idiot. He looks dumber than dogshit after getting rid of Phil Fulmer and then leasing Lane Kiffin and company. If you hold (i.e., hire) a snake, then why are you surprised when it bites you?

Sidenote: After the basketball player fiasco and this situation, I don't look for Mike Hamilton to continue to be AD for UTK for much longer.

Second, I don't blame Lane Kiffin. He is getting paid more to do less. He is in an easier conference, he is closer to home, he is in a big city (more recruits), he is near the beach, he is in a less-hostile athletic environment (i.e., Knoxville has UT, the mountains, and the world's fastest computer; whereas, LA has the Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers, etc.). To be blunt; USC has Snoop Dogg, UT has Smokey the Dog.

Third, I do blame the system. But what can you do? Athletics and academics don't mix - but for some reason they still pay these idiots to continue with this experiment. I briefly covered this in my ramblings about a year ago.

Fourth, I think the UTK shortlist includes Muschamp and Cutcliffe (Current Duke coach, former UT Assistant under Fulmer), Chavis (Current LSU Defensive Coordinator, former UT Assistant). The key here is hiring someone who will stick around (at least until UTK fires them). Rumors also include Air Force’s Troy Calhoun, Ole Miss’ Houston Nutt, Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy and Connecticut’s Randy Edsall.

Fifth, I think Mike Hamilton better watch out for Fulmer. Fulmer may be AD at UTK pretty soon.

Sixth, *haha*. [Yes, that has been posted before.]

Lastly, I think UTK will survive. Lane Kiffin wasn't the best choice last year, and it was only going to get worse. At least UT recouped $800,000 and looks like the "good guy" (albeit the dumb guy) in this transaction.

Joe W. has an undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and graduate degrees from Virginia Tech and Penn State. He now teaches at a state flagship school in Knoxville, TN. This article is cross-posted on his buddy's blog WhoLurks.

Quest Season Wrapup

I realize I should have posted earlier in the week, but I was busy.

Keeper: Knocked out in first round of playoffs
Ship: won championship
Adjustingthecup: lost first round playoff game
Who Lurks: did not make playoffs

Week: 1-0

Quest: 1-15

Wife: Lost first round playoff game

I'm not sure if winning one championship really qualifies as a good year. But making 3 playoffs (out of 4) and winning one championship ... not bad for me.

Quest Week 14

Here is an update on my quest for a 4-0 fantasy football weekend.

Keeper: First Round of Playoffs; Result = Loss
Ship: Last week of regular season; Result = Win; rematch in first round of playoffs as #3 seed
ATC: Last week of regular season; Results = Win; #1 seed in playoffs
WL: Regular season ended.

For the week ... 2-1
For the year ... 33-22

To Date:
Keeper: 7-6 (6 of 12): made playoffs; lost first round game
Ship: 9-5 (3 of 10): made playoffs
ATC: 11-3 (1 of 10): made playoffs
WL: 6-7 (10 of 14): did not make playoffs

Quest for 4-0: 1-13

In other news, my wife's fantasy team is 11-3, and in 1st place, after a win this week, and she has the most points (by over 200). She completely dismantled the #2 team in the league the last week of the regular season [she has Chris Johnson and Brandon Marshall]. She has finished in the top half of scoring each week in her league except for 2 weeks (so 12 out of 14 weeks). She does have her work cut out for her though in the playoffs.
